An AI shopping assistant is a storefront tool that helps a shopper find a product by asking, instead of by typing a keyword into a search box. The shopper describes an occasion, a budget, a fit, or a job to do. The assistant recommends products from that store's catalog and, on some products, can move the chosen item toward the cart.
The name gets used for several different tools. Some are support inboxes with an agent attached. Some are search apps that also offer a chat. Some are concierges whose only job is the catalog conversation. The checklist on this page is how to tell them apart before you compare prices. A dated table of prices and App Store ratings is in the 2026 comparison.
What it does in the session
A shopper rarely arrives with your exact product title. They arrive with a constraint: a wedding, a skin concern, a room, a recipient, a ceiling on price. An assistant turns that sentence into a short list from the catalog you actually sell. A useful one stays inside that catalog. It does not invent a product you do not stock, and it does not treat a support ticket as the same task as a purchase.
Vorena is one of these tools, and it is ours. On Shopify it shows live price and stock and can add to cart in the chat. Lite and Starter are the plans on sale. They are flat monthly plans with a conversation allowance, not unlimited plans. Photo search and upsell suggestions are coming on Growth. They are not part of the plans you can buy today.
How it differs from a chatbot
A chatbot answers questions a store already wrote down: shipping, returns, order status, store hours. Success is often measured as deflection rate, the share of contacts that never reach a person. That is a support outcome. It can be the right outcome. It is not evidence that a shopper found a product.
An AI shopping assistant is pointed at the catalog. The shopper who says "something for a summer wedding under $150" is not opening a ticket. They are trying to buy. A tool can do both jobs. Gorgias and Tidio publish support inboxes that also describe selling. Shopify Inbox, on Shopify's own help pages, is storefront chat that can answer from the catalog and hand off to staff. The chatbot comparison and the Inbox comparison keep those jobs separate. The comparison hub lists the rest.
How it differs from a search app
Search retrieves. The shopper types words. The app matches those words to titles, tags, and filters, then shows a results page. Searchandising is the merchant's work of deciding which of those results appear, and in what order. When nothing matches, the shopper gets a zero-results page. Baymard's search benchmark and the Google Cloud / Harris Poll finding on irrelevant on-site results are about that path. They are cited at the bottom of this page. They are not performance claims for any assistant.
An assistant is the alternative path for the shopper who cannot name the product. It does not replace filters for someone who already knows the SKU. It replaces the guesswork when they do not. Search apps such as Searchanise, Klevu, Boost, and Wizzy are covered as search, not as assistants, in the search app roundup.
How to choose one
Use this list on the vendor's own pricing page and on the Shopify App Store listing. If the two disagree, write down both. Do not average them.
- Name the job. Discovery in the catalog, support deflection, search and filters, or a quiz. Buy the job you have.
- Name the meter. Flat monthly with an allowance, per conversation, per resolution, per visitor, or a custom quote. The pricing-model post records which vendors use which meter, as of 15 October 2026.
- Read the cap. A free plan and a cheap plan are different once you know what stops. Ask whether extra use is blocked, billed, or only available on a quote.
- Check what "unlimited" means on that page. Some vendors sell an unlimited tier as a quote. A flat fee with a monthly allowance is not unlimited. Vorena is the second kind.
- Check the trial and the card. Note the length, whether a card is required, and who bills you. Vorena's trial is 14 days, with no credit card, billed through Shopify.
- Read the App Store rating and the review count together. Vorena's listing has no reviews yet. A 5.0 from a handful of reviews is a different fact from a 4.6 with thousands.
- Check what is actually on sale. A feature in a screenshot can sit on a plan you cannot buy. On Vorena, only Lite and Starter can be bought. Growth and Scale are coming soon.
- Decide whether you need a second tool. A helpdesk and a concierge can both be installed. Pay for both only if you want both jobs.
